Girteka Logistics celebrated the 2020 Lithuanian Road Administration road safety event “Protect myself and protect you“, working alongside other professional organizations and public institutions to educate fellow road users on how to remain safe, smart and aware.

“Road safety is at the heart of our company, and with 14,000+ truck drivers on the road we try at every possible opportunity to be the best in the industry for our drivers and for the well-being of the community,” says Kristian Kaas Mortensen, Director, Strategic Partnerships, Girteka Logistics.

The event “Protect myself and protect you“ (SAUGAU save ir tave”) was held at the Cathedral Square, in Vilnius, Lithuania’s capital. The main theme of this annual event is to keep the local community informed and updated on road safety.

Mr Remigijus Lipkevičius, Acting Director of SE Lithuanian Road Administration, says, ‘The aim of this annual event is to remind that each of us is responsible for traffic safety on our streets and roads, no matter what kind of road users we are. The goal of the Lithuanian Traffic Safety Strategy Vision Zero is to have zero fatalities on the roads by 2050.’

Girteka Logistics is aware of its increasing accountability for the social well-being of the population it serves as customers, colleagues, partners and the community, and is actively investing in road safety.During the event, the in-house Drivers Academy from Girteka Logistics brought their expertise, and an interactive learning experience with three of the latest Volvo FH 500 trucks and trailers.

Along with our partners from Volvo Trucks, the sophisticated technology in the trucks was showcased, pointing out driver blind spots and how to act around a truck on the road.

“In order to stay safe on the roads, we must know how to act not only around cars, but also around heavy vehicles, such as trucks. Understanding the challenges faced by truck drivers helps to increase our awareness as pedestrians” explained Nicholas Kjaer, Managing Director at Volvo Lithuania.

Experiential learning is the most powerful tool to demonstrate the challenges faced by truck drivers, so visitors were invited inside the truck’s cab to experience the driver’s workplace and view of the road.

To keep the younger visitors interested, Girteka Logistics had a trailer set up to show the importance of reflectors and visibility. Road Safety books were also given away, prepared together with the Lithuanian police, Save the Children, Circle-K and Volvo Trucks.

In addition, officers from the Lithuanian police force, fire fighters, and the State boarder security all shared details of the daily work these public institutions undertake.Watch the “Protect myself and protect you“, video:
